Abstract

Surrey has been building small satellites for more than four decades. Work that began in the Surrey Space Centre in 1979 showed that capable missions could be built quickly and at low cost. It led to the spin-out of SSTL and opened space to many more organisations, including Taiwan through FORMOSAT-7.

In 2025 the University launched the Surrey Space Institute (SSI) to build on this legacy across disciplines. Its focus is on delivering missions, research on climate and resilient space systems, and training the next generation of the space workforce.

I will outline SSI’s plans and our thinking on a shared in-orbit research facility. The aim is to make the step from ground demonstration to proven flight technology faster and cheaper, so that teams bring a payload and inherit the rest.

I will close with the opportunities for researchers, companies and students in Taiwan, building on the partnership between Surrey and NCU.
