Abstract
Lunar magnetic anomalies interact with the solar wind to form mini-magnetospheres and produce complex near-surface plasma environments. Lunar Prospector, Kaguya, and ARTEMIS observations have identified lunar external magnetic enhancement events (LEMEs), including shock-like enhancements whose occurrence exhibits an organized distribution along lunar orbit relative to Earth and the Sun. We propose a conceptual physics-based orbital-variation model of lunar mini-magnetospheres, constrained by these event distributions. The conceptual model will incorporate anomaly geometry and relative position, magnetic-field intensity, in situ magnetic-field observations, magnetopause height, solar-zenith-angle-dependent velocity shear, and solar-wind speed, direction, density, and temperature. Its core objective is to predict orbital variations in the spatial coverage of lunar mini-magnetospheres and in associated plasma dynamics. By transforming increasingly rich satellite observations into a predictive physical model, this work may support assessments of stable or predictable shielding conditions for lunar-base site selection and long-term mission planning.
