本所主要教學方向和研究領域為

(1)太陽圈物理、太空電漿物理、行星科學磁層物理:
探討有關太空電漿的各種物理和動力特性，包括太陽物理、太陽風、行星際磁場與磁層的現象、交互作用、動力過程。

(2)電離層物理、高層大氣:
綜合地面電離層探測儀的垂直觀測，地面衛星網之緯度與高度二為電離層斷層掃描，GPS經緯二維成像，研究電離層電漿三維結構與動力，此外亦研究太陽風與磁層、電離層之耦合現象以及中高層大氣物理和其動力過程。

(3)雷達科學、遙測科學:
整合特高頻雷達、雙態雷達、電離層探測儀、大氣雷達，從事電離層以及中低大氣現象與動力過程。並利用各種資源衛星和航空器上之酬載進行地物地貌鑑識、目標定位、雷達影像校正、大地測量以及衛星氣象。

(4)衛星酬載和雷達元件的設計與製作:
透過設計製作雷達元件、探空火箭和衛星級酬載設計及研發，並有設備進行先行驗證及測試，提升我國太空科學及科技水準並奠定太空研究之自主能力。

Special topics include the physics and dynamics of upperatmosphere, ionosphere, magnetosphere, interplanetary space and Sun, planetary science, space plasma simulation, radar meteorology, and satellite remote sensing etc.
The Institute is the sole institution in Taiwan providing such broad and complete programs in space science research and education; it continuously participates in several international space research projects and collaborates with space science institutions of other countries.
